The Gwynedd Spaniel Club held its open cocker at Hales Estate by the kind invitation of Mr R Hall and family. We were met by a welcoming log fire and cup of tea or coffee by gamekeeper Jo Baker the wife of head keeper Steve Baker.
After all the preliminaries were done we set off for the wood, where the efficient team of stops were already in position. We were joined by 4 gundog judges from the show world, who are now required to attend a field trial to gain first hand insight into gundogs at work.
Game came to hand steadily; our guns were attentive and for the most part accurate.
Simon Tyers was brought out of the wood to retrieve a strong running cock pheasant, having to ignore a dead bird in the field. Lovelight Garnet Glow of Rinagree took a good line across a large field up to strong sheep netting fence. Simon and the judge followed, Simon lifted his dog over the fence, the dog went a further 50 yards or so before catching up with the bird, a fine display of teamwork.
After all the remaining dogs had completed their runs the judges got together and with no need for a run off the trial was declared over.
We all returned to the Gun Room for refreshments
After a well support raffle, organised to perfection as usual by Veronica Selby, the following results were given:
1st Fernmoss Flow – Roy Ellershaw
2nd FtCh Chyknell Iris – Ian Openshaw
3rd FtCh Orgest Yfwr – Will Clulee

Great thanks were given to the Head keeper Steve and Jo, all the helpers, guns, judges and our sponsors Skinners Dog Food.
Roy was stuck for words (for a second or two) as this made her up to Field Trial Champion. He thanked the judges for seeing it his way and expressed his gratitude to Mr Hall for allowing us to test the dogs on such an outstanding estate.
